Zach's Last Word, served up in a coupe after shaking and double straining

The Last Word Cocktail

The Last Word is a spirit-forward cocktail in which equal parts of gin, Green Chartreuse, Luxardo Maraschino liqueur and lime juice come together to create a blissful balance of sweet and citrusy sour, with distinctive herbal notes and a sharp bite. Not a fan of gin? Use vodka or your spirit of choice! The Last Word is a drink that's right for just about everyone, and with the gin at 40% ABV (varying by your chosen brand), the Luxardo Maraschino liqueur at 32% ABV and the Green Chartreuse at 55% ABV, it's a high-proof drink that you're sure to feel almost as much as you enjoy.
Prep Time 2 minutes

Course: Drinks

Ingredients

  • 3/4 oz London Dry Gin (I prefer Gordon's)
  • 3/4 oz Green Chartreuse
  • 3/4 oz Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
  • 3/4 oz Lime juice (Fresh squeezed)
  • 5 drops 4:1 saline solution or a pinch of salt

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Strainer
  • Jigger
  • Coup or martini glass (or your glass of choice)

Method

  1. Combine all of the ingredients in your cocktail shaker
  2. Add the ice into your shaker
  3. Shake until chilled...then shake for a few more seconds. The Last Word is a very rich cocktail that's a little more on the sweet side than most spirit-forward drinks, and so I prefer mine slightly thinner than usual. I've also seen some people add a dash or two of water to theirs, but I find the drink to be even better at the lower temperature resulting from the extra shaking.
  4. Strain the mixture into a coup or martini glass (double-straining is recommended if you did not strain your lime juice first).
  5. Optionally, garnish with a lime wheel, lime wedge, a Luxardo Maraschino or brandied cherry, or serve it sans-garnish. The Last Word is one of only a select few drinks that I personally prefer to serve naked (without garnish).
